WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN BOOKING A CREATIVE FINE ART CHILDREN SESSION
PRE -PLANNING
Fine art children sessions require some pre- planning to ensure the mood and feel is perfect for turning images into high quality prints and artwork. A consultation meeting / coffee would be best to ensure proper dreaming up of ideas , and planning. I will guide you through venue , attire and props selection.
VENUE SELECTION
First and Foremost, it is important to select a proper venue to compliment the look and feel of the shoot. I always advise parents to look at the venue as a starting point, and add in the elemets from there.
ATTIRE
I will guide you with outfit choices depending on the theme and mood of the shoot. We also have a range of beautiful couture dresses to rent for little girls, and will be adding outfits for boys very soon.
PROPS
Props, such as certain toys or sitters may be used for some sessions to add to the mood. Camera shy children may also quite benefit from the usage of props for the session, as it gives them something to focus on. Props should hovever be kept classic and understated, so as to not completely overshadow the subject. Antique toys work very well for sessions.
ON THE DAY
My fine art Children portrait session aims to step into the whimsical world of children and their imagination. I aim to capture a story which will transport you to your own youth. On the day of the session we will start shooting at around 4 pm so that we can capture in the golden hour. I will help the children relax, and follow their natural movements and curiosity, so that they can be photograhed in their natural state. Light direction and prompts will be given to the children to try and evoke certain moods, however, for the most part I follow them around with my camera which allows me to step into their world, uninterrupted.. Parents are welcome to work with the photographer, however I advise against trying to get certain poses out of the children or overwhelming them with too much interferance. The parents would need to trust me as a photographer and the vision. I will ask parents to step in at certain times when nescecarry, but overall the idea is to keep the sessions light and relaxed for everyone.
AFTER SHOOTING
Parents can expect the online album delivery within 3 to 4 weeks of the shooting day. Just as with a painting, precision and Fine artistic teqhniques are used to manipulate photographs which can take up to a few hours per image, making it impossible to rush. Each individual image is edited by hand with the utmost love.

Karen Pretorius Photography offers a wide range of printing options. We however reccomend that images be printed on the reccomended fine art/ Giclee Hahnemuhler paper.
I always shoot the golden hour for the most soft, and dreamy light when it comes to artistic images. We will need to start at around 4 pm and we shoot until we dont have any available natural light.
Creating Fine Art imagery is very much like painting artwork, and using digital tools instead of a paintbrush. I look at concept ideas, styling and storry telling , rather than just your typical - 'look into the camera and smile' type of photos. The images are conseptualised into stories. Where normal images get retouched for beauty to a certain extend , the aim with fine art imagery for children is to enhance the images by using painterly effects. It is digital art.
The process of editing of these imagery is very similar in time. I use purchased digital backdrops of any theme imaginable to create gorgeous scenes we would not be capable of capturing otherwise. For example, a beach themed shoot in Pretoria! Ask me about any type of scene you would like and I will source the digital backdrops.
I intend to maintain a tailored service that ensures the overall process runs smoothly. Therefore, all client sessions are booked by appointment only, and the number of clients is limited in order to provide the highest level of service.
